Women's Motorcycle Helmets

It used to be difficult to find women's motorcycle helmets that fit well, provided the necessary protection and looked great. That is really no longer the case. The type of helmet selected is important and there are several types to choose from.

Full-face motorcycle helmets

A full face helmet covers the head and most of the rider's face. It wraps around the chin from left to right and usually has a face shield attached. The shield or visor is usually clear or tinted acrylic and helps to block wind and rain on the face. By the way, it does a nice job keeping insects out of your teeth too. There are many advantages to using a full coverage helmet, including maximum protection as compared to other types of helmet. Some riders find these a little restrictive and uncomfortable, but that often means that the helmet isn't the proper size. The better full face helmets have the right amount of padding to keep it secure and comfortable. Even though they have a chin strap, you need to make sure that the helmet moves with you when you turn your head from side to side. Today's helmets are lighter because of the materials used, so full face helmets no longer have the stigma of being excessively heavy like they used to.

Three quarter shell motorcycle helmets

This was the most popular and most commonly seen type of helmet for years and is still an execllent choice. The helmet extends down to cover the ears and ends at the chin area without the wrap around bar at the bottom. The chin strap ensures that the helmet stays secure on the rider's head. The protection provided is comparable to what you get with a full face helmet while providing what some riders consider to be a less restrictive feel. They make it easier to communicate with other riders or passengers and can be easier to get on and off. Three quarter shell helmets are a good choice for those who log lots of miles on long outings.

Half shell motorcycle helmets

Also known as a beanie helmet, this type of helmet covers only the top of the head and ends just at the top of the ears. Some have a small visor at the brow line to help reduce glair from overhead sunlight. Most half shell helmets are DOT certfied but always check for the sticker to be sure. If it has a DOT certification sticker on the back, you can assume that the helmet provides the same safety and protection as the other types of helmet in the areas covered. Of course there is less coverage area so you do give up some overall protection. The beanie helmet is most appropriate for those who ride often, but take shorter trips. These are not recommended for riders of racer style bikes or off road use.

Novelty Motorcycle Helmets

Novelty helmets don't really have a particular dimensional or coverage standards. Often the name indicates a helmet that has a certain unique style and that is not DOT certified. They come in many shapes and sizes including skull shaped, jockey shaped, rebel hat shaped, German army helmets and there are many more. Remember, that in states which have mandatory helmet laws, a helmet is not considered street legal unless it is DOT certified and has the sticker to prove it. Novelty helmets are often worn by riders more as a fashion statement first, and any protection provided is an afterthought. We don't recommend them for new or inexperienced riders.

You can now get women's motorcycle helmets in all styles and designs. They come in all colors and with almost endless graphic designs especially for the ladies.
